This is not an official report of the END Task Force!

There is very little change in the situation from the Task Force side. They are continuing to make progress on depopulation and clean up of the 6 commercial ranches involved. Four ranches have been depopulated (1.4 million hens) with two in progress. On small flock premises 1200+ have been depopulated (78,000+ birds). In Nevada 50 premises are under quarantine; 31 have been depopulated (486 birds).

Surveillance teams are scheduled to start looking for END in N. Calif. soon. they will probably start in the San Joaquin Valley. The Ag Commissioners will be assisting with this effort.

All bird owners are requested to monitor their birds closely and report any unusual health problems to the Task Force at 800-491-1899. There is no charge for laboratory work when END is suspected. When birds must be depopulated the owners are fairly compensated based on the value of the birds. Bird owners are encouraged to protect the health of their birds by avoiding unnecessary contact with other birds.

Subject: END Update

Progress and problems continue. One new commercial farm has been found positive. About 1.3 million commercial chickens have been killed and put in landfill with about 400,000 yet to be killed. Backyard poultry killed has now reached about 75,000. There are a lot of unhappy people and this is a serious emotional burden for many. We have a friend who lost all his birds and a significant source of income after retirement.

Everyone with birds is in this together!!! Remain alert for dangerous activity by people in violation of the quarantine.

Remember that this is not an official publication of the Task force.

The Federal Quarantine is in effect and no domestically reared bird can now legally be moved out of the 8 county quarantine area without a permit. Two commercial farms have been depopulated out of 5 found infected. Euthanasia and removal of birds on the other two is in progress. The Task Force is moving aggressively to set up tighter biosecurity on poultry ranches, processing plants, feed mills, egg breaking plants and rendering plants in the Zone.

END positive chickens have been found in a small flock in Southern Nevada. The flock has been killed and also a dangerous contact flock. Remember that most or perhaps all species of birds can become infected. Protect your birds from dangerous contacts. The Task Force will be increasing surveillance for END in other areas of CA soon.

There was a few reports of sick birds on several backyard premises but none of these reports could be confirmed. Birds may have been sent to the Lab. for examination but results won't be available until Wed. or Thur. Remember that most or all birds can become infected. The Task Force expects the federal government to issue an extra-ordinary emergency soon (1/8 or 1/9). This will create a Federal quarantine zone. It is expected to include all of Imperial, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angles, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. This should also make more funding available and the Task force is expected to increase in size. There should be a press release. The quarantine rules may change somewhat.

Two commercial farms were recently depopulated and a third farm is in process of depopulation. The commercial farm involvement has slowed progress to depopulate small flocks under quarantine. There are now about 475 scheduled for depopulation. Over 5,000 premises have been placed under quarantine.

This is not an official post of the Task force!!

If you have a small flock I suggest that you don't visit any other birds, keep their birds confined, post your property to indicate no entry without permission, put a lock on bird houses and require necessary visitors to at least wear clean footwear. If you have commercial birds you need to be doing more than this.
